How Does MLC Voting Work?
Graduates’ constituency: Only graduates of a recognised university who are registered on the special electoral roll can vote.
Teachers’ constituency: Teachers of secondary level or above with at least three years of service in the last six years can vote.
Why counting takes so long: Voting is done on ballot papers using preferences. If no candidate reaches the required quota, the lowest candidates are eliminated and their second-preference votes are transferred. Graduates’ seats have far more voters, so they finish last.
